Get A Free Copy of My Credit Report
All my life I never really understood credit or how it worked. I had one credit card, which I paid off every month and I had a bank account with a debit card attached to it. I rented an apartment and made payments on a modest car. I paid my bills on time, and never really stretched myself. I was lucky. Many people get stuck into the credit muck by racking up the credit card bills with multiple credit cards, getting into mortgages they can’t really afford and owning cars they really shouldn’t have purchased. Eventually, this can lead to financial ruin. Not having enough credit can also leave you with a low credit score, although this situation, the one I found myself in, fortunately did not take as long as the other financial situation would have to resolve. The best thing you can do for yourself if you think you might fall into one or the other categories is to find a way to get a free instant credit report.
Credit is an amazing game of cat and mouse. You never fully understand it and you are always chasing it. Throw hard financial times and a possible layoff or two and it gets even more unpredictable and hard to understand. Once you have resigned yourself to the fact that you need to make a change in order to improve your financial future, you should look into correcting your financial past. The first thing I did was attain a free copy of my credit report. Once I received my copy in the mail, I took the time to look it over to see if there were any discrepancies over the history of my report. There was one discrepancy that I was able to resolve by forward a copy of one of my credit card payments and it raised my score a few points. One of the most annoying things was that it took a few months to raise my score after I proved my “innocence” to the missed payment, but that is just how the credit system works and you will have to plan ahead for this time.
The other thing you can do to raise your score is to hire a credit lawyer or a credit repair company to find the loopholes and exceptions to the rule on payments that you legitimately did miss and need to knock off your credit. After a certain amount of time, bad reports that affect your credit score are supposed to fall off, but unfortunately there are many crooked debt collectors out there who will harass you to no end to get money from you. They can even purchase old debts from old collectors and your previous debts will show up on your credit score as new ones. When things start to get this messy, the only real way to fix them is to hire someone that knows what they are doing.
If you cannot afford a credit lawyer but you have a little extra time, you can always do some research online to find ways to try and get your bad marks knocked off your credit report yourself. It can be difficult and will most likely take time, but there are methods through writing letters that will allow you to eventually settle up on some old debts. I was able to find templates online, some of them even free, that will assist you in writing these letters if you need additional assistance. Either way, it can’t hurt! (SN:0A9SDRMCS0928c)
The best thing you can do for yourself if you are looking to improve your credit score is not to delay! With this process time is the essence since your score will affect many more things in your life than you may realize and you could already be wasting a fortune on interest payments right now.
